James Wilks, a former UFC fighter who produced and starred in the critically acclaimed documentary The Game Changers, has founded a new sports nutrition brand called FȲTA. The first products to launch are protein powders containing EverPro, a plant-based protein made from upcycled American barley. The ingredient is produced by EverGrain, a company that uses proprietary technologies to turn spent brewer’s grain into high-quality ingredients. During beer brewing, the carbohydrates in grains are separated from the protein and fiber. While the carbohydrates are used to initiate the fermentation process, the other components are normally sent to landfill or used as livestock feed. Former Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel has led a £1.2 million seed funding round for British plant-based performance drink brand BACX. Vettel says he used BACX exclusively during his final F1 season last year. He will now become a global brand advocate for the company. “BACX is the first in my 15-year F1 career to have kept me energised right until the end of a Grand Prix, without any stomach problems. French startup Ozers has opened a funding round to raise €300,000 for its innovative microalgae sports supplements. Ozers was founded last year by former boxer Maxence Damarey, food trends hunter Oliver Dahan, and Algama co-founders Alvyn Severien and Gaëtan Gohin. Damarey was inspired to create the company because he was unable to find any supplements that met his needs. New V-Label Survey Finds Plant-based Ingredients in Sports Nutrition Gaining Popularity in Europe

Data from 18 European countries show that plant-based ingredients are appealing to consumers interested in sports nutrition products. For instance, 18,000 Europeans are interested in: plant protein (71%), rice protein (60%), potato protein (59%), wheat protein (59%), pea protein (58%), soy protein (56%), algae protein (41%), and hemp protein (41%). Interestingly, the most common protein on the market – whey – was second in terms of favorability, chosen by 69% of respondents. Egg protein was even lower with 57%.
