Indian Restaurant Chain SGF Launches New Vegan Menu With High-Protein Options

Spice Grill Flame (SGF), a widespread, purely vegetarian restaurant chain in India, has launched a new vegan menu with two categories —100% Plant-Based Protein and Vegan.

The dishes in the first category are made with soy, catering to customers searching for high-protein options. Meanwhile, the second category aims to provide wholesome meals that use SGF’s signature flavors and meet plant-based dietary requirements. With the new options, SGF is responding to evolving tastes and preferences within India, including the rising demand for healthier options. The vegan menu is now available at selected outlets, with more set to be added soon.

SGF launched in 2012 with just two restaurants, and now has over 100 locations across India serving “tangy, spicy, and fiery 100% vegetarian cuisine”. The chain is known for its diverse North Indian and Chinese food, with a particular focus on vegan dishes and chaap (a popular Indian meat alternative made from soy and spices). Founder Mr. Kewal Ahuja says he eventually hopes to expand the chain globally.

“Inviting future”

India has a strong tradition of vegetarianism, and veganism is also beginning to take hold in the country. Earlier this year, Corporate Executive Chef Rakesh Sethi of Radisson Hotel Group said that plant-based foods would be one of the most significant trends in fine dining in 2024. He predicted a “noteworthy surge” in the number of dishes containing plant-based meat, adding that alternative proteins were increasingly being used in Indian cuisine.

A recent study found that almost half of Indian Gen Z students (46.5%) were receptive to the idea of shifting to a plant-based diet, a far higher percentage than for Greek or British students. Women and postgraduates were the most likely to make the change.

“SGF is moving toward an inviting future where health-conscious options meet culinary excellence with the launch of our new vegan menu,” said founder Mr. Kewal Ahuja. “Each dish embodies our dedication to providing nutritious, plant-based options without compromising on the rich flavors that our customers love.”
