Tempeh products in Organic and Smoked varieties from UK startup Better Nature are now available throughout Germany at REWE, furthering the company’s German retail footprint in addition to its availability at Edeka in the Rhine-Ruhr region.
REWE thus continues its support for plant-based producers and innovations in the field, such as the innovative and sustainable 2d printed Mililk discs made by Veganz, which are supplied to the retail group, whose subsidiaries include the REWE, Penny, and Billa chains. This April, REWE inaugurated its first purely plant-based supermarket in Berlin, offering over 2,700 vegan products.
Good for the gut and full of nutrients
Tempeh consists of protein-rich soybeans that are fermented with mould to form a firm block. It has a slightly nutty flavour and can be seasoned and used in many different ways. Sliced or grated, it is suitable as an ingredient for many applications, even for smoothies and sweet desserts.
Better Nature tempeh has been awarded the top score, Nutri-Score A, for its healthy ingredients. Tempeh is not only a plant-based protein bomb, but also good for the gut – important for all organs, including the brain, and therefore for the psyche. This is due to the prebiotics that tempeh contains in abundance – unlike meat and many conventional meat alternatives.
The fermentation process also means that the proteins and carbohydrates in tempeh are more easily absorbed by the body. Further plus points: tempeh contains valuable minerals such as potassium, calcium and iron as well as secondary plant substances. And the production process produces 94 percent less CO2 than beef.

Partnership with Uplegger
In mid-May, Better Nature announced a new partnership with Uplegger to expand distribution on the German market. Since then, Better Nature Tempeh Organic (200 g) and Better Nature Tempeh Smoked have been available in packs of 10.
“Our tempeh is not a meat alternative, but a nutrient-rich product that not only tastes good, but is also quick and easy to prepare,” explained Christopher Kong, CEO and co-founder of Better Nature.
