Cargill has announced that it is investing US$200 million to diversify its starches and sweeteners portfolio by transforming its German processing facilities from corn to wheat, reflecting an increased demand for protein-rich foods. The work is expected to complete by summer of 2021.
By converting the facility from corn to wheat, Cargill will be able to add wheat proteins and specialised starches to its portfolio. Alain Dufait, Managing Director Cargill Starches, Sweeteners & Texturizers Europe, said to FoodIngredientsFirst:
“Diversifying Krefeld’s product portfolio will allow us to address changing market trends like the increasing demand for vegetable proteins,” says Dufait. “In order to diversify the portfolio, we need to transform our Krefeld site from a corn processing facility to a wheat processing facility. We believe such a transformation will help to improve Cargill Starches, Sweeteners & Texturizers Europe’s competitiveness, position the business for future growth and allow it to sustain its market leadership.”
In June, Cargill began work on a production facility in Brazil to produce HM pectin, a texturising agent sourced from citrus fruit, an abundant supply in Brazil, in order to supply the growing demand for fruit-based, confectionery and bakery food applications.
