Dunkin’ Removes Surcharge on Vegan Milk Alternatives at US Locations

Dunkin’, the second-largest coffee chain in the United States, has eliminated the surcharge for plant-based milk at its more than 9,500 locations. This decision follows similar moves by Starbucks, Dutch Bros, and Scooter’s Coffee, marking a shift among major coffee chains toward more equitable pricing for non-dairy alternatives.

“Plant-based milk upcharges create barriers for those who cannot or choose not to consume dairy”

The change comes after discussions with the advocacy group Mercy For Animals, which has campaigned against additional costs for plant-based milk. Advocacy groups argue that surcharges for dairy alternatives disproportionately impact people who are lactose intolerant. Mercy for Animals has noted that the extra cost makes non-dairy options more accessible to these consumers.

Jennifer Behr, corporate relations manager at the organization, stated, “Mercy For Animals applauds Dunkin’ for this landmark decision. Plant-based milk upcharges create barriers for those who cannot or choose not to consume dairy, making this a win for equity and sustainability.”

The environmental impact of dairy production has also been a focal point in the debate. Studies show that oat milk production generates significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions and requires much less water and land than traditional dairy farming. Mercy For Animals and other advocacy groups have urged coffee chains to recognize these environmental benefits when considering pricing policies.

Legal pressure and consumer demand

Consumer pressure and legal challenges have also played a role. Starbucks faced a $5 million lawsuit last year, in which plaintiffs argued that dairy-free upcharges were discriminatory against lactose-intolerant customers. Additionally, advocacy groups such as PETA, Switch4Good, and Mercy For Animals have campaigned for years against the extra fees, highlighting the growing demand for fair pricing of plant-based options.

Behr continued, “This is a major milestone for plant-based accessibility. We commend Dunkin’ and urge other chains, including Bluestone Lane and Biggby Coffee, to follow their lead. Offering plant-based milk at no extra cost benefits customers and the planet.”
