Flora Launches “Category First” Plant-Based Smoked Garlic Butter

Upfield-owned dairy-free spread brand Flora has expanded its range with the launch of a new plant-based smoked garlic butter.

The limited-edition product is claimed to be a category first for butters, spreads, and margarines. According to Flora, it is suitable for making pasta dishes, garlic mushrooms, and more.

A Quantis life cycle assessment tool reportedly shows that the garlic butter has a 78% lower climate impact than dairy butter. The product is vegan-friendly and free of common allergens.

According to The Grocer, Flora also has plans to launch more savoury plant-based butters next year. The products will all initially be limited editions, with the best-performing potentially becoming permanent additions to the range.

“Pushing boundaries”

Flora launched its original plant-based butter block in 2020, describing the product as Upfield’s “biggest innovation in years“. A spreadable version followed in 2021. The range proved very popular, providing plant-based eaters with an alternative to margarine.

Since October of last year, Flora’s entire range has been vegan and free of palm oil, after Upfield stated that it plans to make its product portfolio fully plant-based in the coming years. Flora has also seen success with its “Skip the Cow” campaign, which has reportedly created record levels of awareness for the brand.

“We’re excited to launch Flora Smoked Garlic as a category first and, once again, push the boundaries of what’s possible with plant-based innovation,” said Ian Hepburn, Marketing Director UK at Upfield. “We know the UK loves garlic in their food and so it has always been an ambition to bring this iconic flavour to our product range.”

The garlic butter will launch at 250 Sainsbury’s stores from September 29, before expanding to other retailers.
