Schouten Europe Unveils New Plant-Based Snacks in Response to Market Challenges

Schouten Europe, a well-established Dutch company specializing in plant-based protein products, has launched two new snacks—Power Bites and Sea Bites. The company notes that the introduction of these products is part of its mission to reinvigorate consumer interest in plant-based meat and fish substitutes after a market slowdown.

The new products are part of Schouten’s shift toward offering plant-based snacks that do not attempt to directly replicate meat or fish. Instead, the company is focusing on standalone plant-based products with distinct flavors and textures. Anke van Eijk, R&D manager at Schouten notes that: “Although excellent plant-based alternatives are available, direct comparisons with meat and fish can sometimes be a barrier for consumers.”

“Direct comparisons with meat and fish can sometimes be a barrier for consumers”

Schouten has been committed to providing plant-based protein alternatives for decades. The company was one of the first to develop plant-based meat alternatives in the early 1990s. Over the years, Schouten has built a reputation for innovation, offering one of the most comprehensive ranges of plant-based products in the market, which are distributed in more than 50 countries.

Sea Bites targets those who enjoy fish snacks but seek plant-based alternatives. Using Schouten’s NewTexture technology, Sea Bites offer a unique texture and flavor profile distinct from traditional fish products, giving consumers an entirely new plant-based snacking experience. Van Eijk states, “With Sea Bites, we offer an entirely new plant-based snacking experience, without compromising on taste or texture.”

Schouten has also launched Power Bites, a savory snack ball that delivers a rich, nutty flavor experience but without the use of nuts. This product was developed in response to feedback regarding Schouten’s previous Nut Balls, which, while popular, posed allergen concerns for certain consumers and production environments.

Addressing sustainability and global protein demand

Schouten sees the launch of these products as an important step in contributing to the global push for more sustainable food systems. With projections showing the global population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050, Schouten highlights the need for sustainable protein sources.

Van Eijk continues, “That’s why it is crucial to reduce the environmental impact of traditional protein production. “Consuming more plant-based proteins is essential. We have embraced this responsibility for years and continue to innovate to accelerate this change.”
