Grateful Pies Launches in UK, Next in Line of Vegan Pie Success Stories for 2020?

Grateful Pies is a young UK company dedicated to the traditional, yet future-oriented production of plant-based pies. Despite or perhaps due to its special positioning, Grateful Pies could benefit from the current upward trend of vegan pies in the UK.

The vegan pastry market in the UK has grown tremendously over the past two years. After Greggs sales rose to over £1 billion following the launch of its vegan sausage roll, several pastry brands entered the market with vegan options for the first time, including Scotland’s leading pie brand Bell, British pie king Fray Bentos, pastry producer Ginsters, big player Holland’s Pies and most recently savory pie brand Pukka

The British newcomer relies on plant-based creations based on the family recipe of founder Fabrika Holden’s grandmother. The recipe dates back from an era before food was mass-produced, therefore the pies have a comparatively small list of ingredients and exclude artificial additives. Inspired by the classic French-Canadian Tourtière, a Grateful Pie is made with a light olive oil crust and a filling of green lentils flavoured with Bramley apple, onion, celery, mushroom, potato and seasoned with aromatic spices.

The company further differentiates itself through its focus on tradition and community thinking, which is also reflected in the plant-based Grateful Pie, one of the few sharing pies on the market. Speaking about the societal value of food sharing, founder Fabrika Holden said: “I have always believed in the sharing of food as one of the most significant ways to show love and friendship. Inspired by the discovery of my grandmother’s recipe over twenty years ago I have been showing my gratitude to friends and family with this pie.”

Grateful Pies are available in the company’s online shop, which also offers a gifting service. Wholesale enquiries can be made via [email protected] and will initially be available at ten independent London retailers with nationwide distribution in place by February next year.
