Welsh Brand Do Goodly Secures Tesco Listing for Plant-Based Meal Pots

Do Goodly, a plant-based dip brand based in Wales, has secured listings for four of its products at Tesco supermarkets across the UK. The launch includes three meal pots — Chip Shop Curry, Mushroom Carbonara, and Mac and Greens — along with a Chip Shop Curry Sauce. The meal pots count as one of the five recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables, and contain no added sugar. They are also low in fat and provide a source of protein. This is not Do Goodly’s first partnership with Tesco — the retailer began stocking three of the brand’s dips (Nacho Cheeze, Smashed Pea Guacamole, and Mighty Beetroot Borani) at 50 Welsh stores last year. Do Goodly was also recently accepted into Tesco’s accelerator program. “We …

Head of WWF in Wales Warns of the “Inevitable Demise” of Welsh Animal Agriculture

Gareth Clubb, director of WWF Cymru, the Welsh arm of the environmental organization WWF, has written a blog post in the Welsh language under his social media name Naturiaethwr to warn the region’s farmers of the reality of the Welsh livestock industry: rising costs from energy to veterinary expenses, climate change, and declining consumer demand for animal meat. Clubb argues that people in the UK are reducing their meat and dairy consumption for health, ethical, and environmental reasons. This change in eating patterns threatens the country’s animal farming industry, particularly in Wales, where more than 90% of the land is dedicated to sheep and cattle farming. He highlights that 58% of the population has taken steps to reduce or stop eating meat, although some people are …

UK Food Standards Agency Unveils New Guidance on Authorisation Process for Cell-Cultivated Products in Great Britain

The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has recently released guidance for businesses on cell-cultivated products and the authorisation process to market these products in Great Britain.  The FSA is responsible for food safety and food hygiene in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. However, this guide is specific to England and Wales.  The FSA’s new guidance combines general food law regulations with novel food and GMO regulations and offers business advice to streamline the authorisation process. It includes definitions, status, application details, and recommendations on product safety, labelling, and tasting trials. The UK government has been looking to streamline the approval for cultivated meat to boost food security and sustainability. Meanwhile, the first cultivated meat product on the market is still pending in the UK. To …

Welsh Brand Mallows Beauty Expands to US With Urban Outfitters Launch

Mallows Beauty, a vegan beauty brand based in the Welsh city of Cardiff, has announced it will be launching at 177 Urban Outfitters stores in the US. The collaboration comes after Mallows’ brightly coloured products attracted significant interest on TikTok, with consumers worldwide asking where they could buy them. The brand is now in the process of partnering with a US-wide distributor. Exports already make up about a third of Mallows’ sales, after it previously expanded to Ireland, mainland Europe, and Australia. The brand has seen a 30% increase in turnover since exports began in late 2021. Support from the Welsh government — in the form of market research, advice on regulations, and setting up meetings with potential partners — has helped to boost Mallows’ …

Matt Pritchard’s Dirty Vegan Launches Alt Meats Made From Fermented Veg

In 2018, vegan athlete and former professional skateboarder Matt Pritchard hosted the UK’s first ever vegan cookery show, Dirty Vegan. Two series (and two cookbooks) later, Pritchard has announced the launch of a plant-based food brand of the same name. The range will feature meat alternatives made with fermented vegetables, designed to promote gut health so that “the more you eat, the better you will feel”. The first products to launch are burgers, sausages, and meatballs. They are free of additives and saturated fat, while also being very high in protein — the burger contains 20 grams. On social media, Pritchard said the brand aims to launch for both retail and food service. Dirty Vegan is also working alongside food service outlets to design plant-based …

Welsh Pub Becomes “World’s First” Vegan Steakhouse

This time last year, The Queen Inn pub in South Wales took the chance of going fully vegan for Veganuary and the success was so incredible that the traditional family pub made the decision to become permanently vegan, much to the surprise of most of its regular clientele. To celebrate a phenomenally successful first year of being a 100% plant-based establishment, and to mark the pub’s second Veganuary; Ryan Edwards, who operates the pub with parents Jane and Gareth, came up with a groundbreaking concept which could very well be the first in the world. A Welsh world’s first? The theme for the month, and one which will continue in future depending on demand, is the World’s First Vegan Steakhouse. Since the Queen Inn was …

Welsh Councillors Propose Motion to Block Fully Vegan Menus at Schools & Events

Welsh councillors in the county of Powys are set to bring forward a motion mandating that meat and dairy products be served at all council-run buildings and events. The motion is a response to the decision of Oxfordshire council — which is run by the Liberal Democrats, Labour, and the Green Party — to make the menus at all council events fully plant-based to address climate change. Schools in the county also serve exclusively plant-based food for two days per week. Since Powys County Council is also run by the Liberal Democrats and Labour, Conservative councillors Iain McIntosh and Les George say they are worried that a similar step could be taken locally. Powys is a rural county heavily dominated by animal agriculture. “This council …

Traditional Pub Goes Fully Vegan After “Astonishing” Success of Veganuary Menu

South Wales pub goes fully vegan for good, offering plant-based carbonara, kievs, burgers, and more.  When The Queen Inn in Cwmbran, South Wales, decided to make its entire menu vegan for the month of January, the shift was intended to be temporary. But following an “astonishing response”, with the pub fully booked for the entire month, owners the Edwards family have decided to make the transition permanent. Customers have driven for hours, coming from as far afield as Scotland, to sample the new menu. Ryan Edwards, who runs The Queen Inn with his parents Jane and Gareth, told WalesOnline that fully vegan pubs are still a rarity. “We decided it was worth taking the risk for January because it’s always likely to be a quiet …
